‘This Friday (Feb 2014) we did a little afternoon tiyul to the Shmurat Ha-Irusim on the border between Nes Ziona and Rishon Letzion. It’s a little reserve you reach off a dirt road behind a petrol station past an events’ hall and it really doesn’t look like much until you pull off the dirt road and park at the edge of the dunes.’In February there are huge bushes of rotem (white broom) in bloom, and the famous argaman irises are still flowering too, large purple-brown irises just popping up in clumps among the dunes and grasses. The site is small but very nice for a family picnic and flower walk. The irises are stunning and just behind the reserve there is an abandoned citrus orchard, also in blossom now, the smell is incredible and the trees grown wild give the place an enchanted quality that lends itself to make believe games for kids or romantic picnics for grown-ups.
